Housing
■ Across the nation and in California we are facing a housing crisis decades in the making. In Seaside it has caused an exorcism of our most vulnerable community members. While some communities fail to meet state housing goals, others have earned the distinction of being Prohousing. Prohousing communities get priority for resources to build housing to help meet the statewide goal of 2.5 million homes by 2030. Our goal is to be a pro housing community to do our part in meeting the statewide housing goal. Currently we are not meeting this goal due to obstacles we face, like currenthousing production policies standing in our way.
■ Earning the Prohousing designation takes commitment to policies that accelerate housing production and minimize obstacles. As your leader I will actively work with the state to combat homelessness and increase the availability of affordable housing in our city, bettering the quality of life forall residents.
■ Committing to earning the Prohousing designation can be reached by aggressively taking on our housing challenge with resilience, steadfast determination, and accountability.
■ Today there are 37 California cities designated as Prohousing communities and Seaside can be the next city on that list.
■ With a Prohousing designation our community will be afforded rewards for reducing barriers to construction, lowering costs, and creating overall housing policies aligned with state goals.
■ In addition Prohousing communities receive additional points in the scoring of competitive housing, community development, and infrastructure funding administered by the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD).
■ It will take commitment to policies that accelerate housing production and minimize obstacles to earn the Prohousing designation. We are ready to take on this challenge and bring real affordable housing now to our community. ■ We must begin with actively working to accelerate thedevelopment of housing for residents of all income levels.
